Have you ever wondered whether older drivers are still fit to get behind the wheel? And especially… should they be required to take a driving test, just as you would to retake an exam? One thing is clear: age is not the sole determining factor. However, certain signals do warrant caution.
Driving after 75: an advantage or a risk?
A terrible accident occurred in La Rochelle. An 83-year-old female driver crashed into a group of children on bicycles, injuring several people. She was driving against the direction of traffic. This accident raises the question: up to what age can you still drive safely?
Data from the Road Safety Authority shows that drivers over the age of 75 are involved in accidents just as often as young people between the ages of 18 and 24. This similarity may be surprising, but it is logical that vision, reflexes, hearing, and concentration decline with age.

Is there an age limit for driving?
A surprisingly simple answer: no.
In France, the B driving licence is valid for life, except in the case of a serious offence or a court ruling. From a certain age, no medical examination or mandatory check is required to drive a passenger car.
Unlike countries such as Italy or Germany, where medical check-ups are mandatory after the age of 70 or 75, France has chosen to emphasize individual responsibility.
