Do All Lizards Lay Eggs?
No. Although most lizard species are oviparous (egg-laying), a smaller number are viviparous, meaning they give birth to live babies instead of laying eggs.
Scientists estimate that roughly 90% of lizard species lay eggs, while the remaining species have adapted to live birth. This adaptation is especially common among lizards that inhabit colder climates, where developing eggs inside the mother’s body can provide greater protection from low temperatures.
How Do Lizards Reproduce?
Most lizards reproduce through sexual reproduction, where a male mates with a female during the breeding season.
During courtship, males often compete for the attention of females by displaying behaviors such as:
- Head bobbing
- Bright body coloration
- Tail movements

Females typically choose healthy, dominant males, increasing the chances of producing strong offspring.
